Tribute & Message From The Family

HAVERHILL - James P. McCarthy, 57, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Monday, January 20, 2020.

Jim was born in Haverhill on May 31, 1962, son of late James and Frances (Colohan) McCarthy. Raised in Haverhill and longtime resident of Merrimac before recently moving back to Haverhill.

He worked as a Draw Bridge Engineer for MASSDOT for over 10 years and previously worked for Wayne's Drains in Burlington. Jim was loving and extremely proud of all three sons. He was an assistant coach during their hockey activities from Learn to Skate through Midgets and never missed any of their hockey or baseball games. Jim was the least selfish person and gave back to youth hockey as a board member for the Haverhill Thunder Program.

Jim loved sports, especially football and hockey, where his favorite teams were the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. He spent his free time watching various sports games live and on TV; and he played football, baseball and hockey in his younger days. Jim was always there to help relatives and friends. He enjoyed volunteering at the Penta Golf Tournament, being with his Garibaldi brothers and his wide circle of friends. Jim loved his dogs, Jack, Bruin, Charlie and Pumba and enjoyed spending time and traveling with his wife to Ireland, Switzerland, Italy, England, and France. His favorite relaxing place to go with his wife and family was Siesta Key, Florida.

He always helped anyone no questions asked. Jim was always the one that cracked jokes and was the entertainment of the party. He was always smiling. As a result of his generous spirit and pleasant personality, he was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Family members include his loving wife Jolanta (Goral) McCarthy; cherished sons Ryan McCarthy and his fiancé Katie Salvagno, a wedding Jim was looking forward to celebrating, Nathan McCarthy and the late Matthew McCarthy who passed in 2009; siblings Hannah Brigandi and husband Joseph and the late Mary Otis; other in-laws Mark Otis, Derek Goral and wife Lillian and Daniel Goral; nephews and nieces James Bucuzzo, Michael Brigandi, Nicole Brigandi, Alexandra Otis and Wyatt Goral.

Visiting hours will be Sunday, January 26, in the Driscoll Funeral Home 309 So. Main Street, Haverhill from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, celebrated in Sacred Hearts Church, 165 So. Main Street, Haverhill at 10:00 AM. Please meet directly at the church. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill. Please consider donating in Jim's memory to his son Matthew's scholarship that keeps his sons memory alive through college scholarships awarded to high school graduates. Dear McCarthy family, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, father and brother. To Jim's family,
I am so saddened to hear of Jim's passing. We grew up in the acre neighborhood, went to St. James and HHS. Porky was always smiling and joking and enjoyed living in the moment. He had a great outlook and was the life of the party. His smile was infectious and if he laughed, everyone was laughing with him. Jim will always be fondly remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with Jim and you, during this difficult time.

Dear McCarthy Family, our world will not be the same without Jim's cheer and positive attitude. Only person I know who could chew you out and make you laugh at the same time! Jim was a dedicated worker and so smart and sensible. My office will never be the same. Julia Whiteneck, MassDOT
