Obituary for Patricia (Holleran) Denn

December 1, 1928 - February 7, 2019
Groveland, Massachusetts | Age 90

GROVELAND - Patricia "Pat" Ellen (Holleran) Denn, died peacefully at her home on Bare Hill Road in Groveland. Born December 1, 1928, in Roslindale to Joseph Edward Holleran and Elizabeth Mathers Holleran, Pat was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Betty Ann and Gerry, and her brothers Edward and David.

The Holleran kids attended Roslindale Public Schools including Roslindale High School where Pat was a member of the class of 1946. She graduated from Emmanuel College on June 5, 1950 and married Edward "Eddie" John Denn on June 8, 1950. The young couple had their first child, Eddie, Jr. in 1951 while living in Roslindale. They bought their first home in Hopkinton and added Mary, Michael, Peter and Joe. In 1958 the family moved to Groveland where Patrick, Catherine, Chris and Becky were born.

Pat and Eddie's home on Bare Hill Road was at the center of the family's life. With a barn, a near-by pond, woods, fields and nine kids there was always something to do and someone to do it with. Cedardale Swim and Tennis Club was next door and close enough that all summer long, Pat could hear happy kids, including her own, at play, while she folded laundry in her kitchen.

Sundays meant 10:15 am Mass at St. Patrick's in South Groveland where Pat taught Sunday School. A Sunday dinner – usually a roast, potatoes, gravy and vegetable prepared by Eddie – was served at noon at the kitchen table with its picnic table style benches, a high chair at the head of the table, and the phone off its hook to silence its ring.

When Becky entered first grade, Pat began her professional teaching career. She took classes at Salem State College and became certified to teach elementary school. Until her retirement in 1996, Pat taught at the Shanahan School in Groveland, the Central School in West Newbury, and for 20 years at the Page School in West Newbury. Pat was a natural, compassionate teacher and was especially skilled at teaching children to read. She introduced a generation of West Newbury school kids to Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books from which she'd read aloud after recess. She thoroughly enjoyed her students, her fellow teachers and the Page School itself, set, as it is, high above the Merrimack River.

Pat took pleasure in decorating her house on Bare Hill Road as well as the summer cottage she and Eddie purchased on Country Pond in Newton, NH. She painted, wall papered, refinished furniture and floors. She was an avid gardener and a member of the Groveland Garden Club. Pat's gardens were carefully planned, color coordinated and meticulously maintained with the precious water from the well.

Pat loved to go "antiquing." She'd stop at Burnham's Barn on her way home from the Page School and delight in a treasure she'd find for the price of a dollar or two. She spent many a Sunday afternoon happily wandering the tables at Todd Farm in Rowley and Sedler's in Georgetown in the company of her mother or Mary.

Pat had a lifelong affinity for American history. She had great admiration for George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as well as local historical sites such as Hannah Duston's brick garrison house and John Greenleaf Whittier's homestead, both in Haverhill.

Pat found great satisfaction in simple things. The marriage she and Eddie shared lasted for 65 years, ending with his passing in November of 2015 – a great accomplishment achieved simply through mutual respect, love and commitment. Their family is so grateful.

Pat and Eddie's daughter Mary passed away in August of 2014 leaving behind her husband Denis LaBombard.

Her surviving family members include her children, Eddie and his wife Kim of Millbury, Michael and his wife Susan of Walpole, Peter and his wife Carmen of Groveland, Joe and his wife Suzan of Somersworth, NH, Patrick of Westford, Catherine and her husband Andy Freed of Melrose, Chris and his wife Kelli of Boxford and Becky and her husband Lee Slocum of Haverhill. Also daughters in-law Carol Denn of Mendon and Sarah Denn of Westford. She leaves 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sister in-law and brother in-law Marie and Gene Riley of Natick as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Finally, Pat leaves dear neighbors Bill Baert and Jan Parini as well as her first and oldest friend Eleanor Brooker Evans of Galesburg, IL.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 10, in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street, Haverhill from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Services will begin Monday in funeral home at 11:00 AM.
