Obituary

ANDOVER - Randall Ray Humphries (Randy) passed away Friday January 17th, just 4 days after his 72nd birthday, from complications from a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family: his wife, Cathy, his four children and his sister Madge. Born in Knoxville Tennessee, he spent much of his childhood in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area of California and graduated from Nevada Union High school in 1966. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley (Cal) on an athletic and academic scholarship, and was a 3 year starting quarterback for the California Golden Bears football team. He met his future wife Cathy (Cleave) at Cal. They married in 1971 and moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and settled on Mercer Island just outside of Seattle where they raised their four children.

Most of his career was in commercial real estate and office leasing. His favorite pastime was raising his family and supporting their involvements in sports, theatre, and school. He expanded his 'sports fan' interests to crew, water polo and especially swimming for his children. He drove them to countless rehearsals, morning practices and competitions. When the children were young he was Junior and Senior Warden and on the vestry of Emmanuel Episcopal church on Mercer Island and actively involved in supporting their spiritual life and their involvement in that community.

Becoming a grandparent in 2013 took on a very special meaning for Randy. So upon retiring in 2017, Randy and Cathy decided to join their daughter Jane and her family in a move across country to Andover Massachusetts to continue their close relationship with her two little sons. It was a big step to leave Seattle after 45 years but also a gift that brought much happiness, joy and good times with their grandsons.

Randy is survived by his wife Cathy of Andover MA, daughter Rebecca of Port Orchard WA, son Daniel currently living in Amsterdam, daughter Jane Cardoso (Rick) of Andover MA, and daughter Eleanore (Brian Wisniewski) of Monterey CA. And his world revolved around his 4 grandsons: Eric and Will Cardoso (6 and 4) and Kit and Cal Wisniewski (2 and 5 months). He is also survived by his two sisters Madge Bares and Gail Matulovich and their families as well as numerous cousins.

A small private family service was held at Christ Church in Andover. The family is thankful for the loving support they have received from the staff at Christ Church. In lieu of flowers we request any donations in honor of Randy be made to Christ Church Children's Center, 33 Central St, Andover MA 01810.
