Obituary

NORTH ANDOVER - Shirley Johnson Greenwald, most recently of North Andover, MA and Wolfeboro, NH, died peacefully on March 14, 2019 surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by four children, Cynthia Albert Link, Willard F. Greenwald, III, Mary Greenwald, and Vicky Stigum, their spouses, seven grandchildren and two brothers, Laurence and Edward Johnson. Her husband of 42 years, Dr. Willard F. Greenwald, Jr., predeceased her in 1995.

Born in Boston in 1929, Shirley moved to Maine as a child, where she became an accomplished equestrian and a Junior Maine Guide. She spent summers teaching riding at overnight camps on Lake Sebago. It warmed her heart to see many of her children and grandchildren develop the same passion for traditional lakeside summer camp and return year after year as campers and counselors.

Shirley received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and a master's degree from Yale School of Nursing. She met her future husband, then a surgical fellow, during her clinical training. Shirley and Bill put down deep roots in North Haven, CT, where they raised their family. Among her many interests and talents, Shirley was an avid gardener, tennis player and antiques collector who enjoyed vacationing in Florida, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. In her seventies, she relocated to Lexington, MA to be closer to family and, with characteristic aplomb, embraced a new life.

Shirley was unwaveringly devoted to her family. She took great pride in their accomplishments and, as their most loyal fan, made them feel like they were capable of anything. Something of a child "whisperer," Shirley was a genius at knowing what kids needed. Her grandchildren basked in the glow of their cherished Mimi's special love and attention.

Graceful in bearing and elegant in presentation, Shirley had a deep appreciation of fine things and good manners. As much as she loved dressing up and going out, Shirley was not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get to work. She chopped and stacked her own fire wood; shoveled her way out of nor'easters; and, as a longtime volunteer with the Garden Club of New Haven, dug in the dirt to beautify neighborhoods. Her training as a Maine Guide shone through in all these endeavors.

Shirley approached her final days with the same grace and courage with which she lived her life. The family wishes to thank all those who helped care for her. Donations may be made in Shirley's memory to the Yale School of Nursing. Mailing address: Yale University, Gift and Record Services, 157 Church St., 8th Floor, New Haven, CT 06510-2100.
