Obituary

HAVERHILL - Victor Manuel Belete, Sr. was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic on September 24, 1934. He was the son of José Almonte and María Felicia Belete. He passed away on the evening of January 2, 2020 while in hospice care at Wingate Rehab Facility in Haverhill, MA after a brave and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He is survived by his three children: Victor José Belete Núñez, Ingrid María Belete Núñez, and Edwin Alberto Belete Núñez ; his two grandchildren María Chabél Uwase Byamana (Chabélis) and Andreas Nshimiye Byamana; his elder sister Luz Erminia Esperanza Reyes, younger brother Franklin Ambiorix Lama, and younger sister Belgica Altagracia Reyes.

He was predeceased by elder brother Juan Bautista Reyes, younger brother Santiago Expedito Reyes, and younger sisters Ana Rosa Reyes and María Francisca Reyes.

He was born and raised in Santiago during the Trujillo dictatorship and was in military service in the capital Santo Domingo during the Trujillo assassination and ensuing civil war and U.S. occupation of the 1960s. He immigrated to the United States in the late 60s due to the harsh economic realities in the Dominican Republic as a result of the decade's political upheavals.

He never had the opportunity to attend university but was blessed with a sharp mind and innate intellectual abilities. He was an avid reader and bookworm and self-taught in many disciplines. He loved history, art and politics and was a great lover of many genres of music. He loved to watch cooking and geography shows. He loved cooking and baking.

After he settled in Haverhill, MA, he became a Jehovah's Witness and joined the Jehovah's Witness congregation in Haverhill. His love of Jehovah knew no bounds and his faith in Jehovah was powerful and fierce. He spent the final decades of his life as a faithful servant to Jehovah while leading Bible studies and bringing comfort and solace to countless lost souls including prison inmates.

He was a devoted, caring and loving father and grandfather who tried to instill a love of Jehovah, and deep and good values in his children and grandchildren.

Chabélis and Andreas will greatly miss their Abuelo. He was a simple man who lived and conducted his life with humility in the way of Christ. He took tremendous pride in the educational achievements of his grandchildren and his intellectual prowess and tradition is the legacy that is alive in them and will continue on in the generations to come. We his children and grandchildren vow to keep his memory and legacy alive.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 7 in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street, Haverhill from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are all invited to attend and welcome.
